Logan sits where Island Creek meets the Guyandotte River, in a narrow valley between steep hillsides. Inside the city limits, the city runs the sewer lines. Up the creeks and hollows around town, many homes still drain to a septic tank in the yard. When a tank goes too long between pumpings, drains slow down and sewage can back up into the house.
Honey Dippers serves Logan as part of our service area in the southern coalfields. From Roderfield, at the center of that area, the road runs through Gilbert and Man, then follows WV-10 into Logan. We bring septic tank pumping to homes off the sewer lines around Logan. Call or text (304) 436-3409 and tell us what your system is doing.
Tell us about the septic tank, line or grease trap and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
The 2020 census counted 1,439 people in Logan, on about 1.1 square miles of land. The city of Logan runs its own sewer lines and a sewage treatment plant. Outside the city, the Logan County Public Service District runs sewer lines in parts of the area.
By its own count, the district serves about 11,000 water customers and about 1,100 sewer customers. So a home can have public water and still drain to a septic tank. The district's website has a map that shows whether an address has its sewer coverage.
In West Virginia, the county health department permits septic systems. The Logan County Health Department has its office right in town. If your system was permitted, its file may show the tank size and a sketch of where the tank sits. When the file comes up empty, our septic tank locating and digging service can find the tank.
The USDA soil survey for Logan and Mingo Counties maps most ground around town as very steep and extremely stony. It rates those soils very limited for a septic drain field. Its reasons include slope, seepage, large stones and bedrock close to the surface.
State design rules do not allow a drain field on ground steeper than 25 percent. That can leave a hillside lot with little room for a new field. When a drain field fails, the fix belongs to a certified septic installer. That work runs through a permit from the county health department.
NOAA's 30-year averages put Logan at about 49 inches of rain and melted snow a year. Logan County has also landed in federal flood disaster declarations again and again, most recently in February 2025. A West Virginia University guide says a flooded drain field keeps the soil from cleaning the wastewater. Keep roof drains and sump pump water away from yours.
The EPA says household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. The right timing depends on the size of the tank and how many people live in the house. A tank that has gone longer than that is worth a call before it backs up.
Across Logan County, Census estimates date about one home in four to before 1960. About one home in five is a mobile home. A mobile home on septic needs its tank pumped on a schedule, the same as a house.
Today's state design rules call for a riser on a new tank set more than a foot deep. An older tank may have none, so its lid can sit well under the yard. We dig down to the lid and pump the tank. Then we close the hole back.
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection studied the Upper Guyandotte River watershed, which ends at Island Creek in Logan. It estimated about 13,500 homes near those streams with no public sewer. Island Creek is one of the streams with a state plan to cut fecal bacteria.
The report names failing septic systems and straight pipes as significant sources of those bacteria. A straight pipe sends sewage from a house right into a creek. The report also says each household is responsible for keeping untreated waste out of streams.
A tank pumped on schedule holds back the solids that clog a drain field. If sewage is already standing in the yard or backing into the house, call for emergency septic service. A broken pipe between the house and the tank calls for septic line repair.
