Septic system repair: is it the tank or the line?
A backup can send you looking for septic tank repair. Sometimes the tank is fine and the line is the problem. From inside the house, the two look the same: the toilet gurgles or sewage comes up in the tub.
A backup or a slow drain when the tank is not full points to the line. So does a wet spot or a sewage smell between the house and the tank. To check the tank, someone has to open it. If the lid is buried or lost, septic tank locating and digging comes first.
Soggy, spongy ground over the drain field is a different problem. So is bright green grass over it in dry weather. A failing drain field is work for a septic installer.
What breaks a sewer line between the house and the tank
West Virginia's design standards call the line from the house to the tank the sewer line. It carries everything you flush or drain to the tank. When it cracks or clogs, waste leaks into the yard or backs up into the house.
Tree and shrub roots can grow into a line and fill it. Weight is another cause. A parked truck compacts the soil and can crush the pipe below. The outlet line past the tank can fail the same ways.
The standards also call for the sewer line to fall at least an eighth of an inch per foot. A sag breaks that steady fall, and waste settles in the low spot. A joint that pulls apart leaks into the ground and lets roots in.
Septic line repair around Roderfield and the southern coalfields
We repair septic lines in McDowell County, Wyoming County, Mingo County, Mercer County and Logan County. Roderfield sits at the center of our service area. Now and then we take jobs across the state line in Tazewell County and Buchanan County, Virginia.
Line repair means digging, and West Virginia has a law for that. The law says anyone who digs calls 811 at least two working days ahead. Weekends and holidays do not count. The utilities then mark their own buried lines.
Septic permits come from the county health department. Around Roderfield, that is the McDowell County Health Department. Ask them whether your repair needs one before the digging starts. Then call or text (304) 436-3409, and we put the quote in writing after we look at the job.
