Mullens, a city of 1,480 people at the 2020 Census, sits where the Slab Fork meets the Guyandotte River. The city sewer covers most of the town, but homes past its lines handle their own wastewater. Most of that ground is steep and stony, and the flat land by the river can flood. On lots like these, septic tank pumping in Mullens protects a drain field with little room to spare.
Honey Dippers pumps septic tanks for homes and businesses, and Mullens is part of our service area. Roderfield sits at the center of that area, about 40 road miles away by US-52 and WV-16. Mullens gets the same septic tank pumping we offer around Roderfield. Call or text (304) 436-3409, and we will look at the job and put the quote in writing.

The city's sanitary board runs the Mullens sewer and its treatment plant on the Guyandotte. The state's water and sewer map draws that sewer area around most of the town. Within about 2 miles of town, the map puts fewer than 1 address in 100 inside a sewer area. Camps such as Itmann, Corinne, Wyco, Otsego and Pierpont sit outside it.
Many of those communities began as coal camps in the early 1900s, strung along the creeks. A 2006 watershed plan for the upper Guyandotte checked county health department files. It found a septic permit on file for about 1 home in 10 across the watershed. It also named failing septic systems as a main source of bacteria in the river.
If your home sits past the sewer lines, the tank in your yard is yours to keep up. Septic tank pumping clears out the sludge and scum before they can reach the drain field. In town, Wyoming County Health Department rules call for grease traps in restaurant kitchens. Those kitchens can call us for grease trap cleaning.
The USDA soil survey maps most of the hillsides around Mullens as very steep, stony Berks and Pineville soils. It rates them very limited for a drain field, mostly because of the slope. The state's design rules bar a drain field on ground steeper than 25 percent.
Most homes in town sit on the flat river bottom, which the survey maps as Chagrin soil and urban land. It notes a flood hazard there and a wet layer about five feet down. NOAA's weather station near Mullens averages about 48.6 inches of rain a year. July is the wettest month.
Out past the city lines, the median lot under a home is about a fifth of an acre. A drain field on a lot that size has little room for extra water. If drains back up and the tank turns out not to be full, the problem may be the line. That calls for septic line repair, which we handle too.
Wyoming County has been in at least six federal disaster declarations that included flooding, the latest in February 2025. The U.S. Geological Survey says the July 2001 flood hit the Guyandotte headwaters, where Mullens sits, among the hardest. The WV Flood Tool counts 240 buildings in Mullens inside a mapped 100-year floodplain, most along the Slab Fork.
Floodwater can leave silt and debris inside a tank, the EPA says. A flooded drain field may not take any more water, and drains in the house can back up. Most tanks ride out a flood in the ground. A tank that took on silt still needs to be pumped and cleaned.
If sewage comes up into the house during high water, call us for emergency septic service. We take emergency calls and tell you when the truck can be there.
Septic permits around Mullens come from the Wyoming County Health Department in Pineville, under the state's sewage rules. A new system or a failing drain field is work for a septic installer and that office. Ask the health department whether a repair you need takes a permit.
The state's permit form asks for a sketch, so a permit file can show where the tank sits. Across the 25882 ZIP code, Census estimates put the median home at 1954. Many systems that old may have no file at all. When the record comes up empty, we find the tank with septic tank locating and digging.
