Finding a septic tank starts at the house. Honey Dippers does not run a locator or a tracer down the pipe. We dig up the sewer line where it leaves the house and follow it out to the tank. Then we dig down to the lid so the work can begin.
Once the lid is open, the tank is ready for septic tank pumping. If the trouble is in the pipe, we dig to the line for a septic line repair. We close the hole back when the work is done. Roderfield sits at the center of our service area.
Tell us about the septic tank, line or grease trap and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Tanks get lost in ordinary ways. The lid was never marked, and grass grew over it. A yard regrade put more dirt on top, or an addition went in near the line. Or the house changed hands, and nobody passed along where the tank sits.
In West Virginia, septic permits go through the county health department. The state's permit form asks for a sketch of the planned system. It also asks how far the tank sits from the foundation. Ask the McDowell County Health Department, or the one in your county, what it has on file.
Older homes can make the search harder. By the Census estimate, about half the homes in McDowell County were built before 1960. An older system may have no sketch on file, or one that no longer matches the yard.
Most ground around Roderfield is steep, rocky hillside, with shale and sandstone close under the surface. Under state design standards, the line from the house slopes down to the tank. So start downhill from where the plumbing leaves the house. The EPA says a tank usually sits about 10 feet from the building.
Along the Tug Fork, the flat bottoms are river sand and loam that floods now and then. Flooding hit all five of our counties in February 2025. After high water, the EPA says not to dig into the tank area while the soil is still wet.
We do not probe for the lid or trace the pipe with equipment. A university extension guide warns that rocks and old pipes can feel like the tank under a probe, and on stony hillside lots a probe often hits rock. The sewer line runs from the house to the tank, so we dig it up and follow it.
A septic tank riser is an extension that brings the tank opening up toward the surface. West Virginia's current design standards call for one when a new tank sits more than 12 inches below grade. The riser must reach within 12 inches of the ground's surface. On some yards, a black or green disc in the grass is the top of a riser, the EPA notes.
An older tank may have no riser, so the lid sits as deep as the tank was set. With a riser in place, each pumping starts with less digging. A septic installer can tell you whether your tank can take one.
A cracked or missing lid is a fall hazard. Keep children and pets away from it until it is replaced. The EPA says only trained specialists should clean or repair a septic tank, because tanks may contain dangerous gases.
